Registration days for Amherst County children eligible to enroll in kindergarten in the Amherst County Public Schools for the 2022-2023 school year will be held on the dates listed below.
Wednesday, April 24, 2024 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 25, 2024 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Children have to be age 5 on or before September 30, 2024, in order to enroll in kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year.
New student registration forms for the 2024-2025 school year can be filled out online at New Student/Kindergarten Registration. Please also schedule an appointment in your child’s school to complete the in-person screening on one of the dates listed above.
If you do not have internet access, please visit one of our WiFi access locations at any of our schools, Amherst Town Hall, and Amherst/MH Libraries. If you are unable to access these locations or do not have a device, please schedule a time to meet with your building administrator.

Parents/guardians should NOT schedule appointments for their children to have physicals and immunizations to enter school at this time. Completed physicals and immunizations will be required for children to enter school, but these requirements can be completed later.
If you plan to register your new student at a school outside of your assigned zone, there are specific steps to take. Prior to entering school, the following will need to be provided to the school:
- Proof of Residency (for example: electric, water, or cable bill)
- Child’s Birth Certificate
- Commonwealth of Virginia - Kindergarten Physical Form School Entrance Health Form (MCH 213 G) from your doctor. This form must be completed within the 12 months prior to the first day of school and include the child’s complete immunization record and well-child check (Code of Virginia § 22.1-270).
- Proof of required immunizations listed below:
- Four DPT (1 DPT must be after 4th birthday)
- Four Polio (1 dose must be after 4th birthday)
- Two MMR (1st dose must be after 1st birthday)
- Three Hepatitis B
- Two Varicella (Chicken Pox vaccine) or doctor’s documentation that child has had chicken pox
- Two or Three Rotavirus
- Two Hepatitis A
